Did you know that you can create the appearance
of looking thinner than you actually are without
losing weight? Sounds like a dream come true! "But
how?" you might ask. Answer - By creating an
optical illusion with the styles, fabrics and
designs of the clothes you wear. Here are some
tips to get you started:
- Choose smaller prints over
larger ones with fabrics that have a
design.
- Avoid bulky fabrics which
include thick blanket wool and
mohair.
- When wearing hip-hugging
jeans, wear a crisp, unstructured shirt to
camouflage a heavy lower body. In general -
long, loose unstructured tops and jackets, can
hide many figure problems.
- Another option is wearing a
short jacket with an A-line
skirt.
- Stay away from full dirndl
skirts. A-lines are the most figure
flattering.
- Thick fabrics and wide or
tight pleats that spread apart will make you
look wider.
- Shiny fabrics such as satin
will both cling and reflect even the most minor
figure flaw.
- In jackets, vests, blouses
and coats, avoid double-breasted
styles.
- If you want to minimize how
you look from the waist down, wear darker colors
on your lower half.
- Also, keeping one tone to
your whole outfit, including stockings and
shoes, will create an impression of a longer,
slimmer line. You can wear one color from waist
to toe.
- On the parts of your body
that you wish to lengthen or narrow, wear
vertical lines. Examples: narrow lapels,
V-necks, long necklaces/scarves, rows of
buttons, creases, and pleats.
- If you are going to wear
stripes, make sure that they are vertical rather
than horizontal. Vertical lines lengthen or
narrow and horizontal lines widen or
shorten.
- Stay away from snug pants
and pencil-slim skirts. Choose loose-fitting
lower garments made of fabrics that move easily
on the body.
- To minimize hips and
stomach, wear tops bloused out over your lower
garment. Avoid tight waistbands, spreading
pleats, bulky, bias-cut, or excessive fabric
gathered at the waist. Skirts flatter the figure
more than pants.
- If you are wearing pants,
select the “flared leg” style which is more
flattering than the “peg leg” style. The “flared
leg” style creates a nice balance between your
hips, legs and ankles. The “peg leg” style
accentuates and visually increases the size of
the hips.
- And finally, wear sheer,
dark hosiery. It creates a shadow and has a
slimming effect on the shape of the
leg.
