Many people who experience a passing blue mood
often claim that they have the illness of
depression, which is very untrue. Depression is an
illness that affects the way a person thinks and
feels about themselves, thinks and feels about
others, and affects their sleeping and eating
habits. Depression overpowers the mind and body.
The causes of depression vary from different
types of situations, but sometimes the cause is
unknown. Depression is triggered from an imbalance
of neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain.
Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that send
signals to your brain and nerves, and determine
your body’s emotional state. One common cause of
depression is family inheritance. Depression may
run in your genetic background causing the disease
to carry through generations. Another common cause
of depression is stress. Situations that bring a
deal of great stress such as, the death of a loved
one, break-up of a relationship, and losing a job
can cause great amounts of stress that can lead a
person to fall into depression. Depression can
also be caused by other psychological disorders
such as, eating disorders (Anorexia or Bulimia),
Schizophrenia, and most commonly, substance
abuse.

For people who suffer from Depression there is
a bright side, you can receive help. You should
consult your doctor. Your doctor may prescribe a
medication called an anti-depressant. An
anti-depressant is a medication that builds weak
signals to the brain stronger by raising the
levels of the neurotransmitters, causing the
signals to reach the brain clearly and
significantly. Another treatment for Depression is
therapy. Going through therapy sessions helps you
understand your situation better and helps you in
overcoming it. Therapy also helps you think more
positively and block out all the negative thoughts
that are going through your head.
